Walking soccer adds sessions
Three additional introductory classes in walking soccer by Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Department are planned this summer as a new fun, low-impact sport for aging adults.
“Our aim is to introduce walking soccer to the community with three more free sessions hosted over the summer. In the fall, a more regular program will be offered, including a drop-in program and learn-to-play lessons,” said David Driscoll, 50 Plus coordinator.
The first introductory class on March 21 attracted 32 participants at the New Century Fieldhouse. The next classes are scheduled from 2-3 p.m. on May 9, June 20 and Aug. 8 at the fieldhouse, 551 New Century Parkway.
Walking soccer is played just as it sounds – players walk while passing and kicking the ball. The objective is to score goals while always keeping one foot on the ground.
Here’s an overview of the rules and format at the classes:
- Warmup of 10-15 minutes, including stretching and passing soccer ball.
- Games between 5-member teams on a smaller field with 2-3 substitutes per team.
- 30-minute games (two 15-minute halves).
- No running (with or without the ball).
- No slide tackles or physical contact.
- The ball must stay below head height; no heading is allowed.
Participants should wear comfortable sports sneakers and athletic gear that allows for easy movement during play. They should also consider bringing a water bottle or sports drink for hydration. Register by calling 913-831-3359.
