Tax relief program expands requirements for eligibility

By Andy Hyland

Johnson County is now accepting applications for an expanded property tax relief program designed to benefit more residents who fall within federally set very low income limit ranges.

Residents may learn more about the program and access an application at jocogov.org/JoCoPropertyTaxRelief. The application window will remain open until April 15.

This year’s program expands on a previous program available to seniors and disabled veterans, removing the age limits that were in place last year and increasing the maximum appraised value of a home needed to qualify.

Those applying for this year’s program will still need to provide proof of income, and to receive a property tax relief payment, participants in the program must also:

  • Be a resident of Johnson County
  • Own and occupy their own home
  • Have a home with a maximum 2025 appraised value of $500,000
  • Be current on property tax payments for their residence
  • Be at or below the Very Low Income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (see table)

Residents who qualify for the program will be eligible to receive a payment by check in 2026 to help offset the county’s portion of their property tax bills. The payment amount a qualified applicant receives will not exceed the county’s portion of the resident’s property tax bill.

The county’s website also has information on other property tax relief programs offered at the city and state level. Residents can check out information on those programs and see if they may qualify for those additional programs at jocogov.org/PropertyTaxRelief.
