Save Your Hearing Day set May 31

Hearing is a vital part of our daily lives, and it’s essential to take steps to prevent hearing loss.

National Save Your Hearing Day is observed annually on May 31 to raise awareness of hearing loss prevention. Hearing loss is linked to increased risks of depression, falls, cognitive decline and social isolation.

A variety of causes can contribute to hearing loss. Experts recommend hearing tests at all stages of life.

Proper ear protection should be worn when using power equipment for yardwork and handiwork or in extremely loud environments like concerts or sporting events.

In addition to those environmental situations, protection from and treatment of certain illnesses that can lead to congenital infections or middle ear infections can help prevent hearing loss.

AARP offers a free online hearing test to members at nationalhearingtest.org. Non-members can pay a small fee for the test.

The Kansas Telecommunications Access Program provides adapted telephones and signalers specifically designed to help with access to telecommunications. Smartphones and tablets with identified software also are available to address your particular needs.

The purpose of the program is to provide specialized telephones and other telecommunications devices to Kansans with disabilities who are unable to use traditional home telephones.

Kansas residents with existing telephone service, qualifying disabilities and income at less than $55,000 per year may be eligible.
