Overland Park Christian Church to serve as a cooling center during summer holidays
Overland Park Christian Church, 7600 W. 75th St., will serve as a cooling center for those unable to access air conditioning during three upcoming summer holidays.
Many cooling centers in Johnson County are only open during their organization’s normal operating business hours, which often do not include holidays.
In partnership with United Community Services and Johnson County Government, Overland Park Christian Church will operate from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the following summer holidays:
- Juneteenth (June 19)
- Independence Day (July 4)
- Labor Day (Sept. 1)
The cooling center will be staffed by volunteers and will operate regardless of weather conditions. The pilot program is a continuation of similar efforts to provide warming centers during winter holidays earlier this year.
While RideKC will offer normal bus service on June 19, there will be no service on July 4 or Sept. 1.
Information on additional cooling centers in Johnson County is available at jocogov.org/heat. Residents may also search for cooling centers in their area using United Way’s cooling center lookup.
