Johnson County’s County Auditor's Office has conducted a performance audit on how the county manages data. It found the county is making progress Identifying and classifying data, but more awareness of vendor security reviews is needed.

This performance audit focuses on how the county manages data through the efforts of the Department of Technology and Innovation to identify data custodians, classify data and review vendor information security. Although a vendor information security review process is in place, the county uses some vendors of software and software subscriptions that have not been assessed.

Audit Services conducts performance audits on a regular basis. Audits provide an independent, objective assessment of the stewardship, performance or cost of policies, programs or operations, and are essential to government accountability to the public.

This performance audit evaluated the bonding process and determined the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office designed and implemented procedures to effectively manage and administer this process. It noted opportunities to improve efficiency in staff used in the bonding process and that cash handling duties were not segregated.

Johnson County’s County Auditor's Office has conducted a performance audit on the payment application and work change directive processes used by Johnson County Wastewater on the Nelson Wastewater Treatment Facility construction project.

The audit determined management followed contract provisions and internal controls. Testing showed these processes provide reasonable assurance that billings are accurate.

Johnson County’s County Auditor's Office has conducted a performance audit that addresses participation in the Women, Infants and Children program. WIC, a federally funded food and nutrition education program, serves eligible women, infants, and children under the age of five years.

This audit finds that thousands of Johnson County residents participate in WIC, but about 6,500 are eligible but not participating. It recommends information and data matching to help increase participation.

Today, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners appointed Douglas Jones as County Auditor. Jones will begin work at the county on Feb. 4.

Jones brings more than 30 years of government audit experience from his time with the City of Kansas City, Missouri. For the last 11 1/2 years, he has served as the City Auditor. During his tenure, Jones issued 84 performance audits identifying nearly $927 million in potential impacts on reducing or recovering costs, increasing revenues and ensuring appropriate controls are in place to protect public funds.

Jones is currently chairman of the Mid-America Intergovernmental Audit Forum, a group that promotes communication and cooperation among federal, state and local audience agencies in our region. Its goal is to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of governmental operations.

“Doug has consistently demonstrated his ability to lead and drive positive change, particularly in large, diverse communities,” said Mike Kelly, chairman of the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners. “We are confident that Doug's skills and dedication will greatly benefit our team, our organization, and the residents of Johnson County.”

Jones said he is looking forward to the new experiences in his role as Johnson County Auditor. “I believe government service and working as a government auditor is a noble profession,” he said. “Most of my professional career has been as a public servant, serving the public interest. A great thing about this job is doing work that can benefit the community.”
