Interested in researching the law? The law library at the Johnson County Courthouse has most resources you'll need related to state and federal law. Learn more about the library, and find answers to the most frequently asked questions — from location to photocopying to staffing.

The Law Library is open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays except county holidays.

The library is located in Suite 1900 of the Johnson County Courthouse at the corner of Santa Fe and Kansas Avenue in downtown Olathe. We are approximately 1 1/2 miles west of the Santa Fe Exit on I-35.

Yes. Tell us what the legal issue or question is that you want to research and our staff will direct you to research materials on that subject. We do not have staff to do legal research for you.

No. We are not attorneys so we can’t give you legal advice, tell you what form is needed, what word to use in a form, interpret the law or interpret a legal document.

Yes. The library computer terminals are equipped for word processing with Word. Prints are $0.25 each.

Yes. The library has Westlaw and Lexis on site. Results can be emailed or downloaded to a flash drive. Prints are $0.25 per page.

Bloomberg Law is also available. Bring a flash drive or pay for prints.

Only registered attorneys may checkout materials.

Yes. The library has public computer terminals that are equipped for Internet access and there is wireless access for laptop users.

The Law Library Board of Trustees are appointed in accordance with KSA 20-3127. The Board consists of five members: two judges of the 10th District Court, and three members of the Johnson County Bar Association. The Clerk of the District Court is the Treasurer of the Law Library.

Renew your vehicle registration

The State of Kansas requires you to renew your vehicle registration yearly. The renewal costs includes registration fees and personal property taxes. After payment is submitted you will receive a current year decal to be placed on your license plate.

You can renew online using iKan. Log in, and click “Renew a Vehicle” to get started. You’ll then be guided through the process to complete your renewal online.

Pay your property taxes

Using our online property search, you can pay your property taxes online. Additionally, you can view your current and previous year’s bills and print receipts. You can search by Address, Parcel, ID, Quick Ref ID or Name.

Once you look up your property, you will see your property tax bill, which you can pay online. You can also submit payment under protest.

Pay your wastewater bill

You can pay your wastewater bill online using Johnson County Wastewater's online payment portal. Additionally, you can manage your account and submit requests or inquiries.

To use the online payment portal, you will need to register for an account with your customer number. Once registered, click "Pay Now,” and locate your account. Then you will see your wastewater bill, which you can pay online anytime.

Motor Vehicles Invoice - Remit payment online for your Motor Vehicle Invoice.

Billing/Fees/Payments

Support Enforcement Fees (District Court Trustee) - make payment for Kansas child support and maintenance (spousal support) via the Kansas Payment Center.
Library Fines and Fees - Pay your Johnson County Library fines and fees online.
Law Library Registration Fees - Lawyers can pay their annual registration fee to the Law Library using this online application.
MED-ACT Ambulance Billing - Pay your Med-Act bill quickly and securely with EMS|MC.
Court Fees - Access Johnson County District Court cases and pay fees if applicable.
Corrections Fees - Pay your Johnson County Corrections fees online.
Environmental Fees - Pay residential trash and recycling hauler fees, swimming pool inspection fees, and septic system construction repair and resale inspection fees.

Apply for permits, pay online, request inspections, submit files, download inspection reports and approved plans, and check status of a permit.

CHAMPSS - Meal Plans - add meals to your CHAMPSS card or donate meals for others using this store.
Home-Delivered Meals Donations - this program provides nutritious meals to frail elderly homebound residents who are 60-years of age or older.
JCDS Emerging Artists - Support JCDS by purchasing artwork from the Emerging Artists program.
JCDS Papercrete Works - Help provide community integrated employment for people with an intellectual or developmental disabilities by purchasing unique and well-crafted product made by many hands.

Training

Child Care Licensing - this program provides online and in person training for people seeking to open a child care operation in Johnson County. Register and pay for classes here.
Mental Health Training - Johnson County Mental Health Center provides a variety of community education courses that help the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health conditions, substance use disorders and suicide prevention.
Contractor Licensing - all Johnson County contractors can use this online application to register for classes, pay for new (and renew) license.

The Johnson County Courthouse is across Santa Fe Street north of the administration building and west of Olathe City Hall. The 356,821 square feet, seven story courthouse building includes 28 courtrooms, secure in-custody circulation, state of the art technology, public gathering spaces and a parking lot.

Attorneys are required to register annually on or before January 15 with the Clerk of the District Court and pay a $100 registration fee pursuant to K.S.A. 20-3126. This fee has been approved by the Trustees of the Johnson County Law Library. To register email DCC-AttorneyRegistration@jocogov.org for further instructions.

Online Payment Option

Attorneys have the option to pay their law library dues online. Dues paid through the Alacriti system are tied to the individual registrant and cannot be paid in bulk. If attorneys pay via Alacriti, the updated information that is provided will serve as the registration form. The auto-filled information is generated from the preferred mailing address listed with the Kansas Supreme Court.

The library contains most resources needed for researching the law of the United States, Kansas or other states. Resources include Kansas statutes and case law, Federal statutes and case law, case law of all other states, Missouri statutes and case law, practice handbooks covering Kansas and Missouri law in many areas, legal encyclopedias, treatises and other materials, and recent legal periodicals.

The library is continuously updating its collection. You can search for materials in the catalog or review its most recent acquisitions.

Attorneys registered with the Law Library have 24/7 access by using the north public entrance on the east side of the courthouse. They must present their Kansas Supreme Court registration card and driver's license or other photo id to Court Security.
