Empty latex paint cans can be placed in regular trash if empty or contents are completely solidified with lids removed to allow trash haulers to verify the can is empty or dry.

Both Johnson County’s Household Hazardous Waste facility in Overland Park and the Olathe HHW facility accept latex paint in any condition – full, empty or hardened.

If the paint is still usable, it may be redistributed or reblended for reuse.

Residents can purchase reblended and recycled latex paint at the Johnson County HHW facility by asking staff for details.

There are no current recycling options for empty latex paint cans that contain solidified or hardened paint. Liquid paint of any kind should never go in the trash and must be taken to the HHW facilities.

How to dry latex paint

Add an absorbent material to the leftover latex paint, such as clay-based (non-clumping) kitty litter, sand, sawdust or oil dry.

Allow the paint to dry completely.

Dispose of the dried material and can with regular household trash.

Check with your regular trash service for any specific restrictions.

If you have questions about latex paint disposal, please contact Brandon Hearn, environmental health specialist at the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment at brandon.hearn@jocogov.org or 913-715-6936.

Spring chores often include dealing with leftover leaves from last fall. Bagging leaves and grass clippings takes a lot of time, and cramming them into bags or bundling them can be difficult.

Comprising 11% of the Johnson County landfill, yard waste is no small matter.

It’s illegal to dump leaves and yard waste into the storm drain. Yard waste contains nutrients that can still be used. With this in mind, there are ways for homeowners to manage their yard waste and help the environment, including:

1. Leave it all on the lawn. Not only do grass clippings and leaves help retain moisture, they also return up to 25% of the nutrients back into the soil. University research recommends that you mulch your leaves and grass clippings using a mulching mower. By “grass-cycling” properly your lawn can look great, and you can save money on fertilizing. Save time this fall and recycle your lawn by skipping the bag and leaving your leaves on your lawn instead.

2. Start a backyard compost bin. Compost bins are available in hardware stores, online, or you can make your own. Combine your yard waste, leaves, grass clippings, along with certain food waste, coffee grounds, eggshells and more to make usable compost.

3. Bag or bundle it and leave it at the curb. Your trash and recycling hauler also provide yard waste collection. Depending on their rules, you can dispose of grass clippings and leaves in paper bags (only paper allowed) or in a durable bin that can be labeled as containing yard waste. Limbs can be collected if they are cut down and bundled together. Check with your trash or recycling hauler for specific information on their requirements.

4. Keep grass and leaves out of the storm drain. When mowing your lawn, sweep grass clippings and leaves that wind up on your driveway and curb back into your lawn. Grass clippings and leaves that block or enter storm drains can lead to increased flooding and increased stormwater pollution. Because storm drains are not connected to a wastewater plant, any material that enters a storm drain will end up in a creek, stream, river or lake. As your yard waste breaks down in these waterways, it adds excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. This can lead to the growth of unwanted algae and other aquatic weeds.

For more information about composting, contact the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment’s Brandon Hearn, Environmental Health Specialist, at brandon.hearn@jocogov.org or 913-715-6936 or K-State Research and Extension: Kansas Healthy Lawns kansashealthyyards.org.

Kansas City is preparing to welcome the world for FIFA World Cup 2026™. For Johnson County residents, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the energy and excitement close to home.

Whether you plan to attend soccer matches, visit fan events or gather with friends at a watch party, a little planning can help you stay safe, comfortable and healthy.

Large international events like this will bring large crowds of people together, which can increase the spread of respiratory illnesses. Talk with your healthcare provider about recommended vaccines, including flu, COVID-19 and RSV. Staying current on vaccines is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself.

If you feel sick, even with mild symptoms, stay home and rest.

Crowded spaces like stadiums, watch parties and public transportation can quickly spread illness. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in public places, after using the restroom and before eating. Using soap and water is best but carry hand sanitizer for times when handwashing isn’t available.

Summer heat can take a toll on older adults, children and those with chronic illnesses. Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen. Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Those at highest risk for heat-related illness might consider indoor activities or events during peak afternoon heat. Watch for signs of heat illness, including dizziness, confusion, nausea or unusual fatigue and seek help right away if symptoms worsen.

If you take medications or manage a chronic condition, plan ahead. Bring your medications with you, keep them out of the heat and take them on schedule. Conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease can increase the chance of dehydration and a heat-related illness, so check with your healthcare provider if you have concerns.

Large crowds and long walks can also be tiring. Wear supportive shoes, use mobility aids if needed and give yourself extra time to move safely.

Before you go, locate seating areas, restrooms and cooling spaces. If you attend events with others, agree on a meeting spot in case you get separated and keep your phone charged.

Food safety is also important. Wash or sanitize your hands before eating, especially when you’re at crowded events. Try to eat foods that are cooked and served right away and avoid items that may have been sitting out for long periods. If you have leftovers, refrigerate them promptly. If you suspect a foodborne illness, report it to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment online or call 1-877-427-7317.

By taking these steps, you can enjoy the excitement of this global soccer event while protecting your health and staying comfortable every step of the way.

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment is now an official human milk donation drop-off site in partnership with the Oklahoma Mothers’ Milk Bank and the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition. The new location expands access to lifesaving donor milk for premature and medically fragile infants in our community and region.

JCDHE was invited to participate after existing Johnson County drop-off sites began reaching freezer capacity before their monthly pickups. Donations are accepted at the Olathe Health Services Building (11875 S. Sunset Dr., Olathe, KS) Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., helping ensure donor milk continues to be collected safely and efficiently as community support for milk donation grows.

Each month, representatives from the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition collect donations from approved sites across the state and transport them to Wichita, where the Oklahoma Mothers’ Milk Bank gathers the milk for screening, pasteurization and safety testing. After processing, the milk is distributed back to hospitals in our region, ensuring donations made locally help babies and families close to home.

“Adding this donation site reflects our community’s commitment to supporting infant health,” said Charlie Hunt, Director of JCDHE. “Every baby deserves a healthy start, and this effort helps expand access to critical nutrition for infants facing medical challenges.”

Individuals interested in becoming milk donors must complete a screening process through the Oklahoma Mothers’ Milk Bank before donating. For more information about donor eligibility and the milk donation process, visit okmilkbank.org.

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has received a federal grant to provide free drinking water well testing until June 30 to local property owners who receive their drinking water from a well.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that drinking water well owners test their water at least once a year to ensure safe drinking water and evaluate the need for water treatment if necessary.

Groundwater is the source of drinking water for 70% of Kansas residents overall. Groundwater is usually quite safe, but well water can become contaminated due to poor well location and construction, lack of maintenance and poor management, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Johnson County residents can get a drinking water well test by contacting Mary Beverly in JCDHE’s Environmental Health Division at 913-715-6901 or mary.beverly@jocogov.org.
