Notice to Appear
A Notice to Appear (NTA) is a document law enforcement gives to a youth and their parent or guardian instead of taking the youth into custody. It means the youth is being released home, but the family must follow up with the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC) within 48 hours to schedule an intake appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
The child or family must call the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC) within 48 hours after the arrest. If no one answers, you can leave a detailed message.
Once they speak with JIAC staff or leave a message, they have done what is required. JIAC staff will try to schedule an appointment with the family as soon as possible.
Yes. When a child receives a NTA, it means they were officially arrested.
Information you will need from the NTA form that was issued to your child.
Please have this information ready when you schedule the appointment.
- The child who received the NTA.
- At least one parent or guardian.
- The signed NTA form from law enforcement
- Family relationships at home.
- How your child is doing in school, including grades, attendance, and behavior.
- Any drug or alcohol use by your child.

Depending on the type of case, your child’s fingerprints, photo, and DNA may be taken as required by Kansas law.
The main goal of this assessment is to find out what your child does well and what help they might need. This helps us offer services to your family and hopefully prevent future police contact.
An attorney is not required at this appointment. We will not discuss the alleged offense. However, you are welcome to contact an attorney at any time.
No. JIAC staff do not contact the child’s school. However, a School Resource Officer may be aware of the arrest because it is a public record.
