History buffs and curious minds alike are invited to explore remarkable moments from the past during a Lunch and Learn event by Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus Department.

On Sept. 23, Jim Thornton will share details on a little- known Revolutionary War battle in his “The Siege of 96” program about the British defense of South Carolina’s Star Fort in 1781. His fifth great-grandfather was one of the soldiers in the “Forlorn Hope” assault team in the battle.

The Lunch & Learn event will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the LongHouse Visitor Center, 9209 West 179th St., within the Overland Park Arboretum.

Cost is $35 for residents and $39 for nonresidents and includes a catered lunch.
