The Johnson County Commission on Aging recently presented the 2025 Peg Deaton Leadership in Aging Award to Kathy Slater.
The award annually recognizes volunteers in the community who have made outstanding contributions to enhance the quality of life for older adults and their families in Johnson County.
For the past three years, Kathy has generously volunteered every Wednesday morning at Sunrise Senior Living in the memory care unit in Overland Park, bringing joy, connection and dignity to residents through carefully crafted weekly programs.
Drawing on her experience as a former middle school teacher, Kathy designs engaging lesson plans that incorporate music, art, movement and even cooking by always adapting activities to suit each individual’s abilities.
Whether it’s patriotic songs on the Fourth of July or crafting autumn trees from painted broccoli, her projects spark creativity and meaningful engagement.
Kathy’s commitment stems from a deeply personal place, as her late husband, Al, was cared for at Sunrise Senior Living. Kathy returned to give back to others facing similar journeys.
“What Kathy means to our residents is something not even words can describe ... She is a true gem to this community,” said Bayleigh Lusso, activities coordinator.
For her unwavering dedication and the light she brings into the lives of older adults, COA proudly honors Kathy Slater with the Peg Deaton Leadership in Aging Award.
