Juvenile Detention Center
The Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) in Olathe, Kansas, has 40 beds for young people ages 10 to 17. It is a secure facility where the court holds youth while they wait for a hearing, state custody placement, placement into a Kansas State Juvenile Correctional Facility, or release back to legal guardians.
All youth at the JDC receive a variety of services, including:
- On-site medical care and education
- Visitation schedules
- Mail privileges
- Recreational activities
- Mental Health Services
Olathe Public Schools teaches classes at the facility. Any credits earned here will be transferred to the student’s regular school.
More than 70 volunteers from the community offer many services to the youth at the JDC, including:
- Recreational Programs
- Bible Studies & Religious Services
- Life-Skills Classes
- Stress/Conflict/Anger Management
- Mentorship
- Library Services (provided by the Johnson County Library)
Visitation
Visitation is available by appointment only. Each youth may have one visit per week, and walk-ins are not accepted. Visits may be denied for youth currently under court supervision.
Virtual visits are 30 minutes, and in-person visits are 60 minutes. At the beginning and end of each visit, brief physical contact such as a hug or handshake is allowed.

Please Note
- All visitors must pass through a metal detector. Failure to do so will result in the denial of the visit
- Restrooms are located in the lobby. Please use them before your visit, as none are available in the visitation area.
- If you leave the visitation area early, you will not be allowed to return.
Visitation Guidelines
- Visits must be scheduled in advance
- Please arrive a few minutes early
- A valid photo ID is required for all visitors
- Visitors without ID will not be allowed to visit
Youth must have an approved visitor list before scheduling visits.
- Up to 10 family members may be approved
- Approved visitors may include:
- Parent or legal guardian
- Grandparents
- Siblings
- Only 2 visitors may attend each visit
- Minors may visit only if they are the youth’s sibling or child and are accompanied by an approved adult.
- Additional requirements for minors:
- Under age 14:
- Written consent from a parent/legal guardian is required
- Birth certificate must be on file in advance
- Ages 0-5:
- Allowed during special visits only, scheduled by a Case Manager
- Ages 6-12:
- May visit virtually or in person
- Ages 13-17:
- Virtual visits only

Personal items are not allowed in the visitation area.
- Leave all items in your vehicle or secure them in a locker, including:
- Cell phones and smart watches
- Keys, purses, diaper bags
- Cigarettes
- Jackets, coats, hats and sweatshirts
- Do not bring any items for the youth.
- Bringing contraband into the facility is a violation of state law.
All visitors must be properly dressed. The following are not allowed:
- Shorts or skirts
- Transparent or revealing clothing (such as halter tops, tube tops, or low-cut tops)
- Hats or head coverings
- Religious head coverings may be approved on a case-by-case basis and are subject to search.
- Clothing that promotes gang affiliation, drug or alcohol use, or contains inappropriate messaging
Visits may be denied, suspended, or terminated if:
- The visitor appears under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- The visitor’s behavior is disruptive
- County property is intentionally damaged
- Dress code requirements are not followed
- Facility safety or security is at risk (such as severe weather, power loss or other disruptions)
