Johnson County Library invites you to get a library card during National Library Card Sign-Up Month
Do you have a library card through Johnson County Library? September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, an opportunity to sign up for a library card if you don’t have one already.
The American Library Association calls this year’s Library Card Sign-Up Month theme “One Card, Endless Possibilities.” With a Johnson County Library card, the possibilities are indeed endless.
A library card provides access to both physical and digital items, allowing you to borrow up to 150 items – from books and eBooks to audiobooks and movies. It also gives you access to many other tools, including:
- Streaming popular movies, classics and documentaries at home
- Homework help, career coaching and job search tools
- Newspapers like the Kansas City Star and New York Times
With a library card, you can enjoy these perks and more at 14 different Johnson County Library branches. (Note: De Soto and Spring Hill Libraries are closed until mid-2026 for renovations).
Johnson County Library cards are available to both residents and nonresidents, and children under 16 can get their own card too (with a parent or guardian to sign them up). All you need is an ID and proof of address.
If you're only looking for digital materials, like eBooks, eAudiobooks and magazines, you can sign up for an eCard from the comfort of your home. You must be a Johnson County resident to have an eCard.
Are you a teacher or homeschooler? You can also apply for an Educator Card, offering longer loan periods and renewals. You can apply in person with a photo ID and proof of address.
You can sign up for a library card at your nearest branch, or you can apply for an eCard online at ecard.jocolibrary.org.
