JCDS artists create World Cup garden spheres
Caresa Williams poses with one of her garden spheres.
Papercrete, a Johnson County Developmental Supports program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is celebrating Kansas City’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ with special concrete garden spheres that are fully mosaictiled and handcrafted from start to finish.
In partnership with the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s public art program, 10 artists in the Papercrete program created concrete garden spheres featuring a soccer-themed mosaic ball.
In designing the spheres, the artists researched the countries that will be playing in Kansas City. They then selected their themes, chose their materials and brought their visions to life through weeks of research and creating their design.
The spheres will be unveiled at a public Artist Talkback celebration from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, in the Rose Garden at Antioch Park in Merriam.
The project will be on display throughout November.
