Hobbies provide many benefits

Spring is the time to try something new, rediscover favorite hobbies and connect with others. The Johnson County Park and Recreation 50 Plus Program offers several ways to stay mentally sharp, physically active and creatively inspired.
A mind-challenging Regal Chess School, appropriate for beginners, starts at 9:30 a.m. April 1 at the Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, Overland Park. The five sessions of 90-minute classes are open to all skill levels. Cost is $86/$95 nonresidents.
Ready to move to music? The Meet, Move & Dance program, with weekly Thursday classes at 6:30 p.m. in the Roeland Park Community Center, starts on March 5 and April 2. The partner-free classes are taught at a relaxed pace. Cost is $45/$50 nonresidents.
Music lovers can enjoy a free jam session at 6 p.m. March 23 in the Roeland Park Community Center and at 3 p.m. March 26 in the Matt Ross Community Center. The sessions will feature songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan and more. Attendees are invited to sing, play and share memories in a social setting.
Creative opportunities are scheduled:
- 5:30 p.m. March 10 about mini terrariums at Meadowbrook Park Clubhouse, Prairie Village
- 1 p.m. April 21 about linocut printmaking at the Roeland Park Community Center
- 1 p.m. April 24 about bird house and blooms at the New Century Fieldhouse.
- Cost for each program is $20/$22 nonresidents.
An embroidery basics program, featuring three classes, begins at 9:30 a.m. March 25 at the Roeland Park Community Center. Cost is $104/$114 nonresidents.

A free day
Johnson County Museum will have a free day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 19 for residents to explore KidScape, enjoy its current signature exhibition and visit its newest special exhibit on democracy.
The museum is located in the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.
