FIFA World Cup 2026™
Johnson County is excited to join the Kansas City metro on the world stage for FIFA World Cup 2026™, an event that will bring us all together, no matter which team colors we wear. We caught the fever early on and have been hard at work for more than two years. Our focus starts at the top with Johnson County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mike Kelly, who serves on the KC2026 Board of Directors.
Johnson County United
Johnson County Government and the cities in our county are collaborating on Johnson County United, an initiative aimed at giving JoCo visitors and residents the ultimate experience during FIFA World Cup 2026™. This collaborative effort will help everyone easily navigate through Johnson County and understand what the county and cities have to offer residents and visitors – before, during and after match days.
JohnsonCountyUnited.com will be the online hub for the latest information and resources as we get closer to the big event. Please bookmark that page and check it often to stay up to date.
How Johnson County Is Preparing
In June 2024, the BOCC allocated $1.5 million to KC2026 to support funding for transportation, safety and security, staffing, legacy and general event support such as marketing, branding and digital/IT support. In addition to financial resources, the county deployed its workforce to start collaborating on and planning for this once-in-a-lifetime event taking place in our metro area. The county created a FIFA World Cup 2026™ Special Project Manager and six subcommittees to focus on transportation, public safety, public health, community engagement and workforce issues.
Public Transportation
To help support ConnectKC26, the regional transportation plan, Johnson County will have its own public transit programs. “Johnson County United Airport Drop and Ride” will offer free transportation between KCI, the Overland Park Convention Center and Lenexa City Center. More information is coming on Johnson County Link, which will link residents and visitors to several Johnson County destinations as well as connect them to the ConnectKC2026 transportation offerings.
