Art by local artists on display at Johnson County Administration Building

A new collection of art is now on display in the Johnson County Administration Building, through the county’s partnership with InterUrban ArtHouse on a rotating art exhibition.

This is the Administration Building’s fifth collection of art since the rotating exhibition began in Sept. 2024. The exhibition features artwork by local artists Michele Sherlock and Joha Bisone.

Sherlock’s art encompasses the mediums of acrylic paint, oil pastel, graphite and texture paste. The works on display in this exhibition include both geometric and abstract paintings.

“I am fascinated by the way in which abstraction and geometric forms allow a person to define a painting from their own point of view,” Sherlock said. “Watching the connection happen between the viewer and the painting is an exciting thing to observe.”

The inspiration for Sherlock’s paintings comes from her love of design, architecture, color, cultural connections and her worldwide travels. Her works focus on the elements of geometry, harmony and movement.

“My creative process is representative of the way I create my life, layering on meaning as I learn and grow,” Sherlock said.

A graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute, Bisone focuses on the mediums of watercolor and acrylic ink. Her works in this exhibition feature brightly colored brush strokes and distinctive lines, which create organic landscapes.

“Inspiration is found through the never-ending supply from the natural world,” Bisone said. “My exploration of patterns, colors and textures meld into abstract shapes with hints of realistic imagery.”

Bisone loves the fluidness and unpredictability of her medium. If she gets bored, she quickly tries to change things up. “Making drastic choices results in interesting things you never would have seen before,” she said.

If you’d like to come view the art by these artists, the Administration Building is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also view public art at several Library branches, also through a partnership with InterUrban ArtHouse.
