AAA shines spotlight on social workers

At the heart of human services are teams of social workers who went into this profession to make a difference. From connecting individuals to needed community resources to providing direct assistance, our team provides valuable services to the most vulnerable residents.

In celebration of National Social Work Month, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of our Area Agency on Aging social workers and the difference they make every day in our community.

1. What does a typical day look like for a social worker?

“Each day usually consists of making in-person home visits, completing assessments, placing phone calls, responding to emails and documenting client activity. Social workers collaborate with a variety of community partners.” – Lindsey Wurtz, aging program services supervisor

2. What is the first thing you usually do when you start your day?

“Get hydrated and caffeinated! When you spend most of your day talking and listening, it is important to have the ability to focus and not have a dry mouth.” – Heather Pineda, eligibility and options specialist.

3. What is your favorite part of your job?

“The beauty of social work is that we all may have different approaches with the same goal in mind. Different approaches may work for different clients and different situations.” – Lindsay Berner, eligibility and options specialist.

4. Can you share a moment when you felt you made a real difference for an older adult?

“The moment I call and tell residents that I am here to assist them with Medicaid applications and not to hesitate to call me if they have questions or do not understand the process.” – Frankie McAfee, administrative case manager.

5. What motivates you to keep doing this work?

“I enjoy having the opportunity to provide my clients with the information, services and support that they need. In doing this, I have a chance to bring a little sunshine and positivity into their lives. I am proud to be a social worker and truly enjoy the clients I work with!” – Amanda Wolfe, eligibility and options specialist.
