5 reasons to take your child to the library

Take Your Child to the Library Day is on February 7, but for two-year-old Freya, every day is library day. Over the summer, she and her mom, Hannah, visited multiple branches of Johnson County Library during their quest to visit more than 150 libraries around the country.

“It’s been so fun,” Hannah said. “Every library brings its own unique experience through its librarians, programs and environment.”

Here are five reasons to make Johnson County Library part of your family’s week, just like Freya did.

1. Build early literacy

The Library’s 6 by 6, Ready to Read program helps children learn six key reading skills before age six. Storytime, songs and rhymes help kids play with words and sounds while bonding with their parents.

2. Enjoy storytime

In 2024, more than 41,000 children and caregivers joined Storytime. These sessions are full of laughter, music and movement. Kids learn to share, take turns and discover the joy of books while spending time with family and new friends.

3. Try Books to Go

Busy week? Grab a Books to Go kit. Each bag includes themed stories and simple activities you can enjoy together at home, in the car or before bed.

4. Learn anywhere

With online tools like ABCmouse, BookFlix and Libby, reading can happen anywhere. Every branch has free Wi-Fi, computers and safe, kid-friendly learning stations.

5. Follow your child’s lead

“Have a loose goal and go with their flow,” Hannah said. “Librarians are happy to help you get started with a library card. Start with the closest branch to you and go from there.”

The Library offers homework help, sewing classes for kids, book clubs for all ages and everything from Nintendo Switch games to graphic novels. It’s a place where kids can learn, imagine and connect. Learn more at jocolibrary.org.
