Each year, communities across the country recognize June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day observed on June 15. It’s a time to shed light on an issue that often goes unseen, and to remind older adults and their families that help is available right here in Johnson County.

Johnson County Area Agency on Aging Director Tim Wholf and Deputy Director Carol Colnar recently attended USAging’s 32nd Annual Aging Policy Briefing & Capitol Hill Day on March 16 - 17. The annual two-day event in Washington, DC. is designed to prepare aging services professionals and advocates to influence federal policy.

There’s a knock at the door and behind it, a timely offer of tree trimming, yard cleanup or roof repair after a typical Kansas storm. While storm season is an opportunity to lend a neighborly hand, it also brings an increase in scams targeting the vulnerable.

Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month is led by the Administration for Community Living. Established in 1963, the annual observance is a time to recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in our communities.
