10 Things to know about Johnson County's K-State Extension Kitchen Restore Project

Kitchen Restore is a program of Johnson County K-State Extension that connects gently used kitchen items with households and organizations that need them. Through community donations and partnerships, the program helps reduce waste while supporting food security and household stability across the county.

1. Regular donation drives

These are held on the first Saturday and third Thursday of every month from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Johnson County Northeast Office located at 6000 Lamar in Mission. We are grateful for our partnership with Johnson County Government for our storage warehouse.

2. Locally supported by Extension Volunteers

Our Johnson County K-State Extension Master Food Volunteers are vital for keeping this program running – they help receive, sort, organize, pack and distribute kits out to the community.

3. Open to anyone!

Anyone in need can request kitchen items for any reason. Kitchen Restore collaborates with churches, social service agencies, food pantries, schools and other organizations, as well as directly with individuals. We have served all corners of the county and have reached youth aging out of foster care, individuals leaving domestic abuse situations, families who have lost everything in a fire, refugees, single moms or dads, seniors needing a little extra support, unhoused individuals, families on a limited income, and more.

4. Donations are essential for program operations

The program operates through donations of new or gently used kitchen items, from measuring spoons and mixing bowls to pots and pans and can openers, as well as monetary donations to purchase the necessary items.

5. Provides education and equipment

Beyond kitchen items, nutrition, food safety and health information are also provided online at jocoeats.org.

6. Address food security and nutrition

A kitchen equipped with essential equipment helps individuals prepare nutritious meals at home, stretch their food budget and utilize food items effectively.

7. Making a difference in the community

In 2025, we distributed 155 kits. Recipients find value and are grateful for the items they receive: “It has made cooking easier, faster and more fun.”

8. Collaboration is key

Community organizations play a critical role in identifying needs and connecting households with these essential kitchen supplies.

9. Supports local community members

Our kits are distributed locally in Johnson County and surrounding areas. Donated items that we do not distribute are passed on to other non-profit organizations serving individuals in need in the Kansas City Metro.

10. There are multiple ways to get involved

Community members and organizations can support Kitchen Restore by donating kitchen items, organizing a donation drive, contributing funds, or partnering to help distribute kits. Together, these efforts help strengthen household stability and food security across the county.
