10 Things to add to your summer photo album

Summer is a great time for making new memories and trying new things. Consider this list a local scavenger hunt of potential activities to experience or landmarks to visit during summer break. Whether you are adding to a physical photo album of printed photos or a digital album on social media, build your Johnson County photo album and capture what connects each of us to the place we call home.

1. Recreate a vintage photo from JoCoHistory.com. Browse JoCoHistory to find a photo at a location near you. Bring history to life by snapping a similar shot and posting a side-by-side that shows the past and present.

2. Show a piece of your personal Johnson County history. For another trip down memory lane, find something that tells your story in Johnson County. Get a photo with an old library card, a sticker from a past election or a Johnson County Park and Recreation t-shirt from your childhood.

3. Visit a library branch you have never been to. With 14 branches across the county, there’s a good chance you haven’t visited every Johnson County library. Take a photo by the entrance, in front of a piece of public art or pose amongst the bookshelves.

4. Document what you were reading this year. While visiting the libraries, take a picture with your stack of library books or your summer reading log. Did you discover any new favorite books, genres or authors this year? What titles were the perfect summer read?

5. Capture a scene that would make a good postcard. ”Greetings from Johnson County!” Whether you are taking in a summer sunset or see the joy in the face of a loved one at an outdoor event, there are so many moments where everything aligns and makes the perfect photo to share.

6. Have a picnic in the park. Pack a lunch and a checkered blanket and spend a summer afternoon at one of JCPRD’s many parks. Take some photos of your companions and the scenic view.

7. Start a new adventure at a JCPRD trailhead. (Extra points if you are on a bike or horse!) Grab a county trail map and set off on a new-to-you or a familiar path. Document your journey!

8. Take a photo with a street sign named for a historic figure or place, then research its origin. Head to the Johnson County Library to research their backstory. Johnson County Museum has also written about several local roads on the JoCoHistory blog. jocohistory.wordpress.com.

9. Johnson County on the move. Pose with a Johnson County bus or stop by New Century AirCenter or Executive Airport. Capture the energy of people going places!

10. Enjoy the summer sun at a county event. Whether it’s Theatre in the Park, the Juneteenth celebration or another outdoor county event, grab a photo of yourself soaking up the sunshine at one of these events, whether you’re lounging on the lawn or clapping from the crowd.
